What's New . . .
New Testament scholar April deConick, of Rice University has a
nice review of
The Judas Brief
on her Forbidden Gospels blog. Her own book on Judas, The Thirteenth
Apostle, a study on the recently discovered Gospel of Judas
should be out by November.
The Disinformation Company has recently
published a collection of essays by several authors, including Richard
Dawkins ( The God Delusion), under the title Everything You
Know About God is Wrong. I have an essay in the collection
entitled "Who Wrote the Gospels? Hint: It wasn't Matthew, Mark, Luke or
John.
For some time now, both The Moses Mystery
(also released as The Bible Myth) and the Sins of King David
have been out of print and hard to obtain. I have recently reacquired the
rights to both books and plan to have them reissued.
Stay tuned for further
announcements. I hope for an early 2008 release for the David book, with The
Moses Mystery coming soon afterwards.
National Geographic Television has produced a series entitled Science of the
Bible. I served as a consultant to the documentary on Cain and Abel
and appear as one of the talking heads. The episode includes some discussion and visuals of possible Egyptian
influences on the Cain and Abel story. It has aired a few times in early
2007 and should be rerun from time to time on the National Geographic TV
channel.
The Judas Brief
vigorous defense of the Palestinian Jews of Jesus’s time . . . This
well-documented work . . . presents some interesting history and is
clearly written.—

The book is very
accessible in terms of the manner in which it reads and is well-argued,
reflecting a revisionary examination of the ancient literature. It deals
head-on with many of the problems that have troubled scholars for years,
including the difficult and inconsistent stories of Judas Iscariot, the
involvement of Jewish authorities in Jesus' death, and the increasing
tendency of the gospel authors to find ways to exonerate Pilate.
